Pittsburg, Kansas – Crawford County Mental Health Center (CCMHC) has launched a new initiative designed to support mothers in balancing the demands of parenting, work, and mental health. The “Mom’s Timeout” parent support group provides an opportunity for local moms to step away from daily pressures, focus on self-care, and build meaningful social connections while participating in fun and restorative activities.

The first gathering featured a painting activity that encouraged participants to explore art and social connection as tools for stress reduction. The second event centered on gardening, where mothers selected and planted their own container plants while learning about the mental health benefits of engaging with nature. Participants also received information from The Mental Health Review Journal highlighting research that links gardening to decreased cortisol levels, which may help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. A third session is planned for later this month, continuing the focus on combining enjoyable activities with mental health education.

“This group provides a much-needed space for moms to recharge and find community with others who share similar challenges,” said Michelle Coulter Morrell, Director of Adult Services. “It’s about self-care, connection, and learning practical strategies that can make a real difference.”

The Mom’s Timeout Support Group is made possible through the generosity of the Women’s Health Fund, Circle of Friends grant, administered by the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas (CFSEK). Their support funded the “Mom’s Time Out: Parenting Support Group” project.
