Pittsburg, Kansas – In recognition of September as National Recovery Month, Crawford County Mental Health Center (CCMHC) is proud to announce the installation of a new naloxone vending machine on its north campus, located just outside of the Addiction Treatment Center at 3103 North Michigan Street.
The vending machine, provided in partnership with DCCCA, is available to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Community members can access naloxone at no cost. Naloxone, also known as Narcan, is a safe and effective medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and save lives.
Naloxone can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose by blocking the drug’s effects. In just 2–3 minutes, it may restore normal breathing for someone whose breathing has slowed or stopped. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were an estimated 80,391 drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2024.
“We are hoping that by making this machine available in Crawford County, we will be able to save lives and get this resource into the hands of Kansans to have in the event of an overdose,” said Cara Hansuld, Program Manager of Prevention Services at DCCCA.
The installation aligns with the mission of Recovery Month: to increase awareness and understanding of mental health and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover. According to state and national data, wider distribution of naloxone has been proven to save lives and connect individuals to treatment and recovery resources.
The vending machine is part of Crawford County Mental Health Center’s ongoing efforts to support individuals and families impacted by substance use. Alongside Same Day Access for treatment and ongoing recovery programs, this addition reflects the agency’s commitment to ensuring lifesaving tools are within reach when they are needed most.
